GUITAR DEPARTMENT

MASTER OF MUSIC IN GUITAR PERFORMANCE

This comprehensive two-year program provides extensive artistic and professional training in performance, music literature, guitar pedagogy, business skills and music research. The curriculum includes two solo recitals plus two years of chamber music. M.M. candidates are encouraged to develop a repertoire of individual interest and are assisted in developing and implementing a career plan. The vibrant NCSA artistic community provides numerous opportunities for candidates to explore innovative ideas in programming and performance. In addition, the guitar faculty and NCSA touring office assist candidates in booking off-campus performances and obtaining employment.

Students receive weekly 90-minute private lessons plus participate in a weekly two-hour guitar performance class. The one-year guitar pedagogy course covers development of both teaching materials and business strategies; teaching assistantships (see below) enable M.M. candidates to further develop their pedagogical skills. The required one-year guitar literature course enables candidates to study general literature topics and/or tailor their study to a repertoire of particular appeal. Candidates elect additional music literature courses from diverse offerings and other courses address topics in music business, artistic development and music research. Internationally-renowned guest artists supplement the curriculum with on-campus performances, lectures and master classes.
