GUITAR DEPARTMENT
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA (grades 8-12)
The NCSA high school guitar program is unique in the world. Not only are graduates among the most accomplished performers in their age group, they also excel academically thanks to NCSA's small class size, dedicated teachers, and superior curriculum. In fact, NCSA students consistently achieve the third highest SAT scores of any high school in North Carolina and are among the top scorers in America. The High School Diploma with a Concentration in Music is a fully-accredited program that includes courses in English, social studies, mathematics, science, health and physical education, along with music courses tailored to each student's needs.
In addition to academics, guitar students enroll in private guitar lessons, guitar performance class, music theory, ear training, keyboard, ensembles and additional arts electives. The guitar curriculum emphasizes development of the fundamental artistic and technical skills that ensure unlimited future growth. Though we seek out the top students from across the U.S., students with limited experience but extraordinary potential are also admitted. Students receive one or two weekly private lessons plus a weekly two-hour guitar performance class, where they develop confidence performing in front of an audience. Students cover a wide range of material designed to develop technical, artistic, sight-reading, ensemble and performance abilities. They are also encouraged to develop a repertoire based on individual interest. The curriculum focuses on classical guitar. However, many students also participate in jazz improvisation courses, jazz band, and form their own groups to perform other music styles. Internationally-renowned guest artists supplement the curriculum with on-campus performances, lectures and master classes. On-campus housing is available for students in grades 9-12. The vibrant NCSA artistic community provides the ideal setting for artistic and personal growth in a environment where musicians, dancers, actors, visual artists, designers and filmmakers live and work together.
